Holbox Whale Shark Tour in Six Decisions

A whale shark swim from Holbox comes down to six choices, and each one has a short answer.

Holbox Whale Sharks, Explained

  • The Reserva de la Biosfera Tiburón Ballena was established by presidential decree published in the DOF and lies off the coast of northern Quintana Roo.

    Source: DOF Mexico

  • The whale shark observation season in the reserve runs 15 May to 17 September, per the 2015 management programme summary.

    Source: DOF Mexico

  • Life jackets or 4 mm wetsuits are required for users, group leaders and guides in the reserve.

    Source: DOF Mexico

  • Activities run in daylight only. Boats must slow when wildlife is at the surface and the activity is suspended in wind.

    Source: DOF Mexico

  • Boat waiting rule: one boat sits at the minimum distance of one boat length from a shark and the others wait.

    Source: DOF Mexico

  • Under the 2015 programme summary there is a maximum number of visitors in the water with a shark at one time and a maximum of dives per person.

    Source: DOF Mexico

  • NOM-171 sets minimum swimmer distances from the head sides and the caudal fin of a whale shark (section 4.5.6).

    Source: DOF Mexico

  • NOM-171 requires mask, fins, snorkel plus life jacket or wetsuit, and bans non-biodegradable sunscreen (sections 4.5.1, 4.5.2).

    Source: DOF Mexico

  • NOM-171 bans selfie sticks, flash and artificial light, and bans contact, harm or riding of whale sharks (sections 4.5.10, 4.7.1.1). Swimming means surface snorkelling without dives, scuba is not a permitted activity.

  • Visitax is mandatory for all foreign tourists visiting Quintana Roo and is paid at the official portal or through SATQ-authorised companies. Press reports put the base rate at 2.5 UMA, about MXN 285 (another outlet gives MXN 283). Mexican citizens and residents are exempt.

How a Holbox Whale Shark Tour Day Runs

Operating hours in the reserve are 07:00 to 14:00, set by the reserve's management programme. Tours from Holbox run about 6 to 7 hours, with an early start to be on the water in the morning window.

From the Dock to the Sharks

Holbox trips start with breakfast and a safety briefing at the operator's office or marina. The VIP Holbox Whale Shark Swim begins at Marina VIP Holbox with a 30-minute breakfast and briefing, then lists a 110-minute speedboat ride to the whale shark area. Reviewers report 1.5 to 3 hours on bumpy days.

The Holbox Whale Shark Tours Group Trip serves coffee, fruit, yogurt and sweet buns at its office one block from the main square. From Cancun, the Contoy Excursions Whale Sharks from Cancun states about 2 hours by speedboat after a van to the marina.

In the Water

The swim itself is fixed by rule. Two swimmers at a time enter the water with a guide, and each swimmer gets two entries that last a few minutes as the shark swims past. Boats cap speeds at 3 knots when sharks are at the surface, and one boat works a shark at a time while the others wait 50 m off or take turns. Xtreme Holbox Whale Shark Eco Tour caps its boat at 8 participants and gives each pair up to 2 water entries under guide supervision.

Life jackets are required and snorkels stay at the surface.

Cabo Catoche and the Ride Back

Several Holbox tours end the day with a snorkel stop and lunch. The VIP Holbox Whale Shark Swim stops at Cabo Catoche for a 30 minute visit with ceviche, guacamole, mango and snorkeling, and reviewers report nurse sharks, stingrays and fish there, before a 40 minute ride back. Xtreme Holbox Whale Shark Eco Tour adds a virgin beach stop with fresh fish ceviche after its Cabo Catoche reef snorkel and cruises the Santa Paula River area for flamingos. Holbox Whale Shark Tours Group Trip keeps a snorkel stop before returning to the mainland and serves ceviche from the day's catch. Manta rays, dolphins and sea turtles are reported by listings as possible extras on the boat ride.

Holbox for Whale Sharks: The Trade-Off

Holbox puts you on the island the reserve is named for, with small boats and short trips for the rest of your stay. It is not the cheapest place to sleep, and the swim day starts early.

What we genuinely like

  • The day starts on the island: the boat leaves from the operator's marina, with 6-7 hour trips on the Holbox cards
  • Shared swims from Holbox start at $179.52 per person and include breakfast, ceviche and gear
  • Small boats, with groups capped at 8 to 10 swimmers on most listings
  • Pickup on the island is offered on some cards, such as the Xtreme Holbox Whale Shark Eco Tour

The honest downsides

  • The speedboat ride out still takes 1.5 to 3 hours over open water and can be bumpy
  • Early starts to fit the reserve's 07:00 to 14:00 operating window
  • No swims at all outside 15 May to 17 September
  • Fees vary by listing, from a departure tax at check-in to $25 in cash at pickup on the Cancun trip

Who it's NOT for: Not for families with children under 6 on most Holbox listings, and not for travelers who cannot handle a long bumpy boat ride or early mornings.

Holbox or Cancun for Whale Sharks

Both boats go out into the same Whale Shark Biosphere Reserve off northern Quintana Roo. The real difference is where you sleep the night before and how long you sit in a vehicle or on the water before the first shark.

Two Ways In

These figures come from each tour card. Holbox boats leave from the island, Cancun boats start with a road transfer, so the price, the length of the day and the fees on the day differ.

When Cancun Makes Sense

If you do not want to spend a night on Holbox, the Cancun trips pick you up at your hotel. Ocean Tours Whale Shark Tour from Cancun includes pickup from Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and the Riviera Maya, with a total day of 7 to 12 hours including transfers. Contoy Excursions Whale Sharks from Cancun picks up from Cancun and Playa del Carmen hotels, runs 6 to 7 hours and finishes with a lunch break at Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres. Both suit travelers who want the swim without changing hotels.

When Holbox Makes Sense

From Holbox you are already on the coast, so the day starts on a boat rather than in a van. The Holbox cards cap groups at 8 to 10 people, run about 7 hours and add stops such as the Cabo Catoche snorkel and a flamingo area. You also sleep on the island and can fill the rest of the week with short trips like the Yum Balam 3-Island Boat Tour.

If you want the swim plus an island stay, start from Holbox.

Getting to Holbox for the Swim

Holbox has no road bridge, so you reach it by ferry from Chiquilá. The crossing takes about 25 minutes and tickets are paid at the dock.

Cancun Airport to Chiquilá

The Cancun Airport to Chiquilá Ferry Shuttle is a shared van from Cancun Airport Terminal 2 Domestic to the Chiquilá ferry dock. It costs $56 per person, takes about 2.5 hours and runs four departures a day at 10:15, 13:00, 15:45 and 18:00. Ferry tickets are not included, you buy them in Chiquilá.

Arrive 10 minutes before departure and note the shared service carries no pets.

The Ferry and the Visitax

The adult ferry fare between Chiquilá and Holbox runs $11.64-$13.75 (MXN 220-260), paid at the dock. The crossing takes about 25 minutes. Foreign visitors to Quintana Roo also pay the Visitax, $14.97-$15.07 (MXN 283-285) per person, which is paid online at the official portal.

Keep both costs in mind when pricing a Holbox whale shark trip against a Cancun departure.

Where to Stay for a Holbox Whale Shark Tour

Whale shark boats leave early from the marinas and offices in town, so a bed within walking distance of the dock saves the morning. The ferry from Chiquilá lands in the same part of town.

Links open a hotel search for that area on Booking.com through Stay22. Prices and availability are shown there.

What Else to Book on Holbox

Whale shark boats are morning trips that finish by early afternoon, and the reserve's operating hours close the swim at 14:00. These island trips fill the rest of the day.

Three Short Trips

All three come from operators on Holbox, cost under $45 and offer free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead. Durations and prices come from each card.

Yum Balam 3-Island Boat Tour$37 per person3 hours (can vary 2.5 to 3 hours)Daytime, none stated
Bioluminescence Kayak and Stargazing$41 per person2 hoursNight
Sunrise Mangrove Kayak Tour$43 per person3-3.5 hoursSunrise

Boat and Paddle

The Yum Balam 3-Island Boat Tour runs 3 hours through the Yum Balam reserve, stopping at Passion Island, Punta Mosquito and Isla de los Pajaros for about 20 minutes each, with flamingos, dolphins and birds reported along the way. After dark, the Bioluminescence Kayak and Stargazing paddles 15 to 20 minutes toward the Punta Mosquito sandbars for about 45 minutes of swimming in the glow, which is usually strongest from May to September. Early risers can swap the night paddle for the Sunrise Mangrove Kayak Tour, about 2.5 hours of paddling the Kuka River mangroves looking for flamingos, crocodiles and herons.

What a Holbox Whale Shark Tour Costs

The shared swims from Holbox list $179.52 to $210 per person, private boats list $1,218.54 and $1,490 per group. The line to check is the reserve fee.

The All-In Check, Tour by Tour

The listed price is not always the price you pay. The table below pulls each whale shark listing's own wording on the park or reserve fee, any payment collected on the day and the minimum age. Check it before booking, because the difference between a bracelet included and a fee at pickup can change which boat is cheapest.

The Federal Fee Behind the Bracelet

The bracelet is the proof that the reserve fee is paid. Under the Ley Federal de Derechos, a protected area of this kind charges $11.49 (MXN 217.32) per person per day. An annual pass costs $191.56 (MXN 3,622.02).

Where a card says the bracelet or government fees are included, you pay nothing more at the dock. Where it says nothing, ask the operator before you pay. The Holtours Whale Shark Tour adds a departure tax at check-in, and the Ocean Tours Whale Shark Tour from Cancun collects $25 in cash per person at pickup.

Shared or Private

A shared boat holds 8 to 10 swimmers on the Holbox cards. A private boat is priced per group. The Xtreme Holbox Private Whale Shark Tour is $1,490 for up to 8 people, with the bracelet included, and children pay the same as adults.

The VIP Holbox Private Whale Shark Tour is $1,218.54 per group and takes children from 6. Tips are not included on most cards, so carry some cash for the crew.

The Honest Small Print

The swim and the tours have real limits. Here they are before you pay.

Do's and Don'ts on the Whale Shark Boat

Do

  • Do book a trip inside the 15 May to 17 September season, because the reserve's management programme sets those official dates.
  • Do keep at least 2 m from the sides of the head and 3 m from the tail fin, the distances NOM-171 sets for swimmers.
  • Do wear the life jacket or wetsuit provided, the management programme requires one for every swimmer and guide.
  • Do use biodegradable sunscreen only, since NOM-171 bans non-biodegradable sunscreen in the water.
  • Do book early in your stay, because the activity is suspended above 25 km/h of wind and you may need a spare day.

Don't

  • Don't touch, chase or ride a shark, NOM-171 forbids contact, harm or riding.
  • Don't use flash, a selfie stick or artificial light in the water, all are banned by NOM-171.
  • Don't expect to dive, the swim is surface snorkeling only under NOM-171.
  • Don't plan the swim for your last day on Holbox, because the swim stops above 25 km/h of wind and you need a spare day.
  • Don't budget only the listed price, check the fees, since the federal park charge is $11.49 (MXN 217.32) per person per day and Ocean Tours adds $25 in cash at pickup.

Everything Else Worth Knowing

Holbox Whale Shark Season and the Best Month

The swim season in the Whale Shark Biosphere Reserve runs from 15 May to 17 September, as set in the reserve's management programme. July and August are the busy peak, when operators on Holbox are at their fullest.

The Season Month by Month

Swims are allowed only inside the official season. The temperatures and rain below are regional climate records for the Solferino station, about 20 km from Holbox. The Atlantic hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November and peaks around 10 September.

Why July and August

Local operators quote July and August as the peak on Holbox, when sharks gather in the largest numbers in the viewing area and boats fill up first. Bookings and boat occupancy climb through these two months, so reserving early matters. Sightings still depend on the animals and the sea on the day.

No operator or authority promises a shark, and the swim rules stay the same all season.

  • Book a peak-date trip weeks ahead, not days
  • Expect fuller boats and less flexible departure times in July and August

Season Dates Can Shift

Under NOM-171-SEMARNAT-2018, SEMARNAT publishes the season dates for each zone two months ahead of opening, so the exact window for a given year is confirmed close to the start. Tour listings on Holbox add that the sharks' arrival varies each year, and one operator notes whale sharks can show up later than the stated season. Check the published dates before you lock in flights.

Trips outside the official window are not sold.

Whale Shark Swim Rules in the Reserve

NOM-171-SEMARNAT-2018 and the reserve's management programme set the rules for every swim in the Whale Shark Biosphere Reserve. Your guide is responsible for enforcing them on the water.

The Rules in One Table

Swimming with whale sharks here is snorkeling with a protected species, so the limits cover how many people enter the water, how close anyone gets and how boats behave. NOM-171-SEMARNAT-2018 is the federal standard and the reserve's management programme adds its own stricter limits where they differ. Here are the rules that shape your day on a Holbox whale shark tour.

What It Means for You

You never touch, chase or ride a whale shark, and you snorkel at the surface only, no dives. You wear the life jacket or 4 mm wetsuit the operator provides and enter the water where the guide drops you, about 15 m ahead of the shark. Use biodegradable sunscreen, or none at all, since ordinary sunscreen is banned under the rules.

The species makes these limits strict for a reason. The whale shark is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List and as threatened in Mexico under NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010.

Bad Weather, No Sharks and Refunds

The reserve suspends the swim above 25 km/h of wind, so weather days happen. Every card on this page offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure.

What Each Listing Promises

Keep a Spare Day

The Atlantic hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November and peaks around 10 September, so a storm can close the port at short notice. Book your swim early in your stay so a cancelled day can be moved to a spare day. Confirm with the operator at least 24 hours before departure, as several Holbox cards ask.

The VIP Holbox Whale Shark Swim lists a 110-minute speedboat ride out, and reviewers report 1.5 to 3 hours on rough days. From Cancun, the Contoy Excursions trip rides about 2 hours from Punta Sam. Search time varies, because the sharks move freely.

Is there a minimum age for a Holbox whale shark tour?

It differs by card. The VIP Holbox Whale Shark Swim is not suitable for children under 10, the group trip from Holbox Whale Shark Tours bars children under 6, Holtours takes children from 1 year and the Cancun trip takes children from 3 years. See the costs table for every card.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Every card offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure for a full refund. The reserve suspends the activity above 25 km/h of wind. Some operators offer an alternative date, and two cards promise a full refund if the trip cannot run. Details per card are in bad weather and refunds.

Is Holbox or Cancun better for whale sharks?

Both depart into the same reserve, so the swim is similar. Cancun suits travelers who want hotel pickup and no island night, while Holbox starts you closer to the water with smaller boats and island trips like the Yum Balam 3-Island Boat Tour around your swim day.

The pick is the VIP Holbox Whale Shark Swim, $205 per person with breakfast, ceviche and the Cabo Catoche snorkel stop.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
